High-Integrity Isolation for Blast Furnace Dust Handling

The Clyde Dust Catcher Dome Valve is a heavy-duty bulk solids isolation valve designed specifically for the demanding conditions found in blast furnace gas cleaning systems.

During the ironmaking process, iron oxide dust is continuously generated and collected within the blast furnace dust catcher. This material must be discharged safely and reliably to maintain furnace availability and ensure stable operation of the gas cleaning system.

The Dust Catcher Dome Valve provides secure shut-off and controlled discharge of abrasive furnace dust, while maintaining the pressure integrity of the furnace gas system.

Developed from the proven Clyde Dome Valve platform, the Dust Catcher Dome Valve combines robust mechanical design with inflatable seal technology, ensuring reliable performance even in extremely abrasive and high-temperature environments.

Designed for Blast Furnace Reliability

Blast furnace dust handling systems require equipment capable of operating under high pressure, elevated temperature and severe abrasion.

The Dust Catcher Dome Valve is engineered to:

  • Safely isolate pressurised dust catcher vessels
  • Discharge iron oxide dust and furnace particulate
  • Maintain gas-tight sealing under pressure
  • Operate reliably in extreme temperature environments
  • Withstand highly abrasive dust streams

This ensures continuous furnace operation without compromising plant safety or process availability.

Performance & Reliability

The Dust Catcher Dome Valve is designed for long service life in continuous heavy industrial duty.

Typical performance characteristics include:

  • Over 1,000,000 operating cycles between major overhauls
  • Seal replacement intervals up to 200,000 cycles
  • Reliable operation across a wide range of harsh process environments
  • Ability to cut through moving or static columns of bulk material

These characteristics ensure high plant availability with minimal maintenance requirements.

Dust Catcher Dome Valve vs Gritzko Valve

Feature Clyde Dust Catcher Dome Valve Gritzko Valve (Paul Wurth)
Valve Concept Inflatable seal dome valve Mechanical sealing disc valve
Sealing Method Inflatable seal activated after closure Metal-to-metal mechanical sealing
Ability to Close Through Material Can close through moving or static columns of dust Typically requires minimal material in sealing zone
Flow Path Full bore unobstructed flow Internal disc mechanism partially obstructs flow
Resistance to Abrasion Protected seal + ceramic/tungsten wear protection Sealing surfaces exposed to wear
Maintenance Simple seal replacement Mechanical refurbishment required
Cycle Life >1,000,000 cycles typical Good reliability but higher wear risk
Capital Cost (CAPEX) Significantly lower equipment cost High capital cost due to complex design
Operating Cost (OPEX) Lower maintenance and servicing cost Higher maintenance and refurbishment cost
Total Cost of Ownership Low lifecycle cost Higher lifecycle cost

Why Steel Plants Are Choosing Dome Valve Technology

Enquire

For many years, mechanical disc valves, such as the Gritzko valve, were widely used in blast furnace dust catcher discharge systems.

Increasingly, operators are turning to Dome Valve technology due to its lower capital cost, simpler maintenance and reliable performance in abrasive dust service.

Lower Capital Investment

The Dome Valve features a simpler, more compact design, resulting in a significantly lower initial equipment cost.

Reduced Maintenance Requirements

The inflatable seal protects the sealing surfaces from abrasive dust, allowing quick seal replacement rather than expensive mechanical refurbishment.

Improved Reliability

The valve can close through moving or static columns of dust, helping avoid operational problems caused by material trapped in the valve.

Lower Lifecycle Cost

With lower capital costs, reduced maintenance requirements, and a long operational life, the Dust Catcher Dome Valve provides a much lower total cost of ownership over the lifetime of the plant.
