For over 25 years, Clyde Pneumatic Conveying MD-Pump systems have been installed in large power generation plants worldwide, providing reliable dense phase conveying of fly ash from ESP and fabric filter collection systems.
The Clyde MD-Pump is a high-capacity, dense-phase pneumatic conveying system developed primarily for fly ash collection systems associated with Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) and Fabric Filters.
Designed for installations with multiple dust collection hoppers, the MD-Pump provides reliable, efficient ash transfer in large power generation plants and industrial filtration systems.
The MD-Pump (Conical) configuration is typically installed on the first rows of ESP hoppers, where ash accumulation rates are highest. It is equally suited to large fabric filter installations, where ash distribution is more uniform across multiple collection points.
By carefully controlling the loading of the conveying pipeline, the MD-Pump achieves ultra-efficient dense-phase conveying with high phase density and very low conveying velocity, resulting in lower energy consumption and reduced pipeline wear.
Key Features
Wide Range of Sizes Available
Multiple vessel sizes allow the MD-Pump to be tailored to a wide range of system capacities and plant configurations.
Fluidising Discharge Aids
Cone fluidisation systems assist material discharge and ensure efficient pipeline loading.
Multi-Outlet Configuration
Multiple pumps can be connected to a single common conveying pipeline, enabling efficient transfer from numerous ESP or filter hoppers.
Heavy Duty Pneumatic Valves
The system incorporates Clyde Dome Valves, providing reliable isolation even with abrasive ash materials.
ESP & Fabric Filter Hopper Evacuation Systems
In large power generation plants, Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) and Fabric Filters collect large quantities of fine particulate ash from flue gas cleaning systems. These systems typically consist of multiple hoppers located beneath the dust collection equipment.
The Clyde MD-Pump is specifically designed to evacuate ash from these hopper systems and convey it reliably to storage silos or ash handling facilities.
Typical characteristics of these systems include:
- Multiple Collection Hoppers: Each hopper continuously collects ash from the gas cleaning process.
- High Ash Accumulation Rates: Particularly in the first rows of ESP fields.
- Continuous Plant Operation: Reliable ash evacuation is critical for plant availability.
- Centralised Conveying: Multiple pumps can feed a common conveying pipeline.
In many ESP installations, two different MD-Pump configurations are used to optimise system performance.
The MD-Pump (C), with its conical vessel design, is typically installed beneath the front rows of ESP hoppers, where ash accumulation rates are highest.
Further downstream in the ESP, where dust loading is lower, the MD-Pump (T) is commonly installed beneath the rear hopper rows. These smaller pumps work in conjunction with the larger MD-Pump (C) units to provide a balanced and efficient ash evacuation system across the entire ESP.
This configuration allows plants to match pump capacity to ash loading across the ESP fields, ensuring stable conveying conditions and reliable system operation.

Key Benefits
Zero Leakage Isolation
Dome Valve sealing technology ensures reliable isolation at pressures up to 30 barg.
Extremely Reliable Operation
Incorporates proven pneumatic conveying components designed for continuous industrial operation.
Highly Energy Efficient
High phase density conveying significantly reduces compressed air requirements.
Unique Valve Actuation
The Dome Valve can cut through moving or static columns of material, ensuring reliable sealing in demanding applications.
Multi-Pump System Design
MD-Pump systems are typically configured with multiple pumps connected to a common conveying pipeline, usually two to eight pumps feeding a single line.
This arrangement allows large ash-handling systems with many collection hoppers to operate efficiently while minimising pipeline infrastructure and capital costs.
